Hundreds of Leading Sportswomen Compete in Sharjah’s Ramadan Women’s Sports Gathering

The ninth edition of the Ramadan Women’s Sports Gathering begins in Sharjah tomorrow, Saturday, May 27, with 350 sportswomen from 20 sports clubs taking part in basketball, volleyball and shooting competitions, plus Ramadan Majlis meetings and social gatherings.

Organised by the Sharjah Women’s Sport Foundation (SWSF), the tournament provides Emirati sportswomen an opportunity to practice and improve their skills in a competitive environment.

The gathering involves intense organisation and supervision, carried out by a host of leading figures from Emirati sports unions and federations, ensuring that all athletes will compete in fair conditions in accordance with international rules and regulations.

Three volleyball matches will take place on the first day of the tournament, beginning with the Sharjah Club competing with the Sharjah Police Club; the Asperia Club will play the ASV Club; while the Sky Dive Club will meet the Chevrolet club. The final match is set to take place on May 29, 2017.

The basketball competition will have six clubs competing for the title and will begin on May 30, 2017, when the Sharjah Club will play against the Salwa Al Asabah Club from Kuwait – the first Kuwaiti team to play in the basketball competition; the Salwa Al Sabah Club will play the Sharqiya Club; and the Sharqiya Club will be up against the Sharjah Club. The final match will take place on June 2, 2017.

Rifle shooting preliminary training will take place on May 27, 2017, with the competition starting the following day. This coincides with the pistol shooting preliminary training, which has its final on May 29, 2017.

SWSF’s vision focusses on unlocking the potential of female athletes and promoting the status of women's sports in Sharjah during the holy month of Ramadan, emphasising the benefits of good physical health and regular exercise.

In November 2016, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, issued a decree setting up SWSF with administrative, financial and legal independence to pursue its activities and achieve its goals.

As per the decree, Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, was named Chairperson of the foundation, and is assisted by an advisory committee, comprising highly experienced and qualified members, whose in-depth knowledge of the foundation’s areas of activities is instrumental in decision making.
