Loving Lausanne, Lavaux and the beauty of the Vineyard Terraces

Lausanne stands out as an iconic city with majestic view soverlooking Switzerland’s most scenic vistas.Minutes away from the main city is a one of a kind terraces which sets the country apart as one of the world’s most beautiful wine region, the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces.

Carved into the hillsides set along the shores of Lake Geneva, Lavaux is one of the oldest vineyards in Switzerland with over 200 different wineries in the area. The 30 km plantation has been cultivated and harvested since the 11th century, and has been a testament to years of family-owned productions which has created different types of wines sold locally and internationally. Lavaux has since elevated its influence to the Swiss traditions, being named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007.

A visit to Lavaux leads travellers to a cultural tour around the beautiful aesthetics and bountiful yields of the landscape, with over 20 miles of walking paths threaded throughout the vineyard. For educational tours, various trails are available from Lausanne to Montreux focusing mainly on the geo-cultural aspect that can be learned from the trip. Each visitor is welcomed by vine-growers with classic wine tastings from different wine cellars, complementing the walks through the vineyards. By the end of the day, tourists are left in awe at the marvellous panoramic landscape which offers an unmatched sense of vitality and tranquillity.

Throughout centuries, Lavaux has been commended for maintaining the quality of wine growing in the area and its contribution to the development of Lausanne and the region.“Lavaux boasts a unique sense of culture that we as Swiss people take pride in,” said Walter Loser, Lausanne Tourisme’s Project Manager for the GCC market. “The evolution of the landscape illustrates the story of vine-growing, its people, and the country of Switzerland.”
