Sunset Music Festival Earns its Place In The Abu Dhabi Concert Scene

‘Absolutely amazing’, ‘a huge win for the Abu Dhabi event calendar’ and ‘definitely the best festival I’ve been to’ are some of the comments being thrown around following the inaugural Sunset Music Festival held on Friday 21 October at Zayed Sports City. The event included a mix 90’s superstars and popular musicians performing for a nostalgic crowd throughout the evening.

Arrested Development and Gabrielle were the clear crowd favorites of festival-goers, which is no surprise considering the mega-artist status both achieved in the 90’s. Garnering roaring applause from attendees at the grounds, the bands’ most popular songs such as ‘Dreams’ and ‘Everyday People’ became sing-alongs for the thousands of people at the event.

Having been warmed up by Adam Baluch, South Africa’s most loved young band, Freshly Ground performed their smooth rhythms as the sky glowed red behind the UAE’s iconic national stadium, providing the perfect backdrop for the relaxed and social event.

Arrested Development followed, giving an inspiring and high-energy 60 minute performance, which included the songs that earned them 1992’s Best New Artist Grammy award - ‘Mr. Wendal’, ‘Everyday People’ and ‘Tennessee’. The bands lead, Speech, got the audience on their feet, saying: “I know you are all sitting down and relaxing, but there’s a rule in Hip Hop that everyone has to get up and shout! So come on everybody let’s get up!”

British soul queen, Gabrielle, proved that 23 years after making a mark on the music scene in the UK, she still has what it takes to command an audience. Singing with her stripped back band, her performance had a unique sense of intimacy that left the fans spellbound. With a set list including some new music and hits from the archives such as ‘Sunshine’, ‘Rise’ and ‘Out of Reach’, the performance hit a crescendo as she belted out ‘Dreams’ to send chills throughout the audience.

“The crowd tonight were amazing, everyone was dancing and singing along. I love performing in the UAE, this is my second or third time here - I always find fans here so warm and welcoming,” commented Gabrielle shortly after her performance.

Building on the energy of the previous headliners, music producers snap! Ended the evening with their mega dance hits. The duo injected new life into the crowd, who could not help but dance along to hit after hit performed. The band’s lead singer Penny Ford interacted with the cheering audience in between songs before playing ‘Rhythm is a Dancer’ to complete the night. The eager crowd demanded an encore, to which the Snap! Happily conceded, performing ‘Rhythm is a Dancer’ again.

“I have loved the festival, it has been such an amazing day,” commented one festival goer, Anne Ortiz. “The atmosphere has been amazing with everyone getting up and singing along with Gabrielle and Snap! I came because I am a huge fan of Gabrielle, but have really enjoyed all of the artists that performed tonight.”

“It's not just the greatest venue for all sports, all abilities and choices, but has now proved that it can put on great concerts that could give Du Forum a run for their money!!” commented another reveller, Ariene Kupisz.

Sunset Music Festival marks the first time that Zayed Sports City has promoted its own entertainment event. Having achieved success in organizing community events that included a feature stage, the festival was the next logical step, and the results exceeded expectations.

“We couldn’t be happier with how our inaugural Sunset Music Festival turned out. The musicians were captivating, the crowd had great energy and there is a fantastic turnout,” said Barry Bremner, General Manager of Zayed Sports City immediately following the event. “We’ve been receiving great feedback throughout the day and there is now no doubt that Sunset Music Festival will become a signature event here at Zayed Sports City.”
