  • The Passenger was coming from Asian country and heading to European destination

Dubai Customs inspectors foiled a bid to smuggle 939.6 grams of pure heroin at Dubai International Airport. A European passenger swallowed most of the 102 capsules in his guts and hid the rest in his handbag while traveling on a transit flight.

Mr. Ali Al Mugahwi, Director of Passenger Operation Department at Dubai Customs stated that the details of the case started when a European passenger was coming from an Asian country and heading towards his European country through Dubai Int’l Airport, Terminal 3. While examining his luggage through the x-ray machine, a Customs inspector at Airport Terminal 3 suspected one of the bags and searched it manually. As a result of the manual search, 19 capsules wrapped in a plastic bag and hidden meticulously and subtly in the bag were found which immediately aroused his doubts of being narcotics. Thus, the suspect was searched but initially nothing illegal was found on him.

When Passenger Investigation Department employees interrogated the passenger whether he was keeping other capsules, he did confess to swallowing other capsules of narcotics and hiding them in his body. He claimed that he did not intend to bring them into the UAE and was going to deliver them to some of his accomplices of the same origin once the transit flight ends at the European country he was heading to.

Inline with the mutual cooperation and coordination between Dubai Customs and the Anti-Narcotics Department at the General Department of Dubai Police, the suspect along with the seizure were transferred to the Anti-Narcotics Office at the Airport.

Afterwards, the passenger started to feel some contractions and stomachache and was referred the hospital after interrogating him where he disposed the 66 capsules. Tests confirmed that the capsules contained pure heroin with a total weight of 939.6 grams.

Mr. Al Mugahwi stressed that customs inspectors’ vigilance awaits and confronts all the smugglers’ attempts and methods. He also said that much attention is given to furthering their competencies through enrolling them in several training sessions in accordance with the upper management directives at the Department in addition to the high degree of patriotism they have which plays a major role in foiling such illegitimate attempts. Not to mention the accumulative experience they have gained through performing their daily tasks and responsibilities.
