Dubai Mosques and Islamic Affairs Buildings to Go Green

Etihad ESCO, the leading energy management services provider will soon float a tender seeking energy efficiency and water saving solutions for 650 facilities under Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department. Etihad ESCO has recently signed a service agreement with the Islamic Affairs Department.

The tender will include retrofit of facilities including mosques, office buildings and imam’s residences. The scope of work includes measures to save electricity, solar PV installation but also sustainable water saving solutions has priority, due to the nature of the facilities. Etihad ESCO will also provide flexible finance solution to the Islamic Affairs Department.

“The retrofit service will offer a range of solutions that will make Islamic Affairs’ facilities across the Emirate eco-friendlier. Taking into consideration resource usage in these buildings, we are focusing on installing water saving technologies, as well as energy solutions like solar PV,” says Ali Al Jassim, CEO, Etihad ESCO.

Speaking about the social importance of the agreement, Ali Al Jassim commented, “Mosques play a key role in creating and increasing awareness among residents and visitors, since they welcome thousands of believers every week. The energy efficiency initiative at these facilities will have a positive effect on the visitors, and will encourage believers to implement energy conservation measures at their homes and offices. This ripple effect will eventually result in Dubai being a sustainable city with an environmentally-conscious population.”
Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai (IACAD) was established in October 1969 by a decree issued by the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum to establish the Department of Awqaf, which was responsible for listing, registering, and managing endowments in Dubai according to Islamic Shari'ah.  The Islamic Affairs Department in Dubai works towards spreading Islamic knowledge and culture, raise religious awareness across the community, review and print the Holy Qur'an, religious publications and multimedia, and license their distribution. The department also takes care of mosques and supervises them.
