FUNN and Discovery Centre conclude two workshops on Zoetrope and Hologram

FUNN, the Sharjah-based foundation dedicated to promoting media arts for children and youth in the UAE, in collaboration with the Sharjah Discovery Centre, concluded last week two workshops on Zoetrope and Hologram, to enhance artistic and technical skills and nurture young talents with the aim of preparing a new generation of creative artists in all forms of media arts.

The workshops come as part of the four-day FUNNtastic Spring Program, designed to engage children and young people in a number of fun and interactive learning activities in order to develop their artistic and technological skills, and help them understand the world around them and interact with it by learning about new technologies used in their daily lives.

Sheikha Jawaher bint Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of the FUNN, said" Our activities are driven by the goal to inspire, create and empower the young and foster their creativity, in keeping with the vision and directives of H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, to provide an inspiring environment for children and young people."

She added: "Through this collaboration with the Sharjah Discovery Centre, we aim to encourage young talent and provide them with an opportunity to actively participate in a fun and learning environment andcreate an engaging atmosphere for learning andappreciating all forms of media arts."
On the first day of the programme, the participating studentsengaged in the Zoetrope workshop, presented by EntisarMoeen from Sharjah Discovery Centre, where they had the opportunity to learn how to create a zoetrope, also known as 'the wheel of life' where they can place a strip of drawings inside the zoetrope's drum, spin it, and look through the slots, to see the images come to life. This illusion of motion depends on two things; persistence of vision and the Phi phenomenon.
A zoetrope is one of several pre-filmanimation devices that produce the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of drawings or photographs showing progressive phases of that motion. The wheel of life device contributed to the invention of animation and consequently to the development of the animation film industry.
On the second day, the participants learnt how to make stop motion of abstract forms using apps in iPhone, while the Hologramworkshop, which was held on the third day, introduced the participating students tothe use of holographic technology in creating black and white holograms.
The students also learnt how to produce 3D images from a pattern of interference produced by a split coherent beam of radiation as a laser. By directing a laser beam at a pyramid shaped glass, this will be reflected as a 3D picture.
On the fourth and last day of the programme, the students engaged in hands-on training about animated coloured hologram to create their own holograms.
