‘ROCKING MY EXTRA CHROMOSOME’ WALK AT ZABEEL PARK CELEBRATES WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY

All 4 Down Syndrome, the UAE based voluntary group, held an awareness walk at Zabeel Park on March 19th. The walk was organised to celebrate the 11th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day. The event brought together 1,000 people from all walks of life in a spirit of fun and inclusivity to help build awareness of Down syndrome.

World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is a UN global awareness day observed on 21 March. The date of 21st of March is significant as the 21st day of the 3rd month signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. The day brings together people to build awareness and inclusivity by hearing the voices of those with Down syndrome across the world.

This year’s “Rocking My Extra Chromosome’ walk in Dubai was organised by All 4 Down Syndrome, a voluntary group which supports families and builds awareness of Down syndrome among the general public and schools. The group, which was started by parents 16 years ago, strives to build public awareness, whilst creating the same opportunities for children with Down syndrome in the UAE.  Also supporting the event were KidsFIRST Medical Center, 7Days UAE, IFFCO (Tiffany), Mediclinic, David Bell Photography, Expat Woman and COALFACE Marketing.

Commenting on this year’s walk, Rebecca Corley, founding parent of All 4 Down Syndrome Dubai said:

“This was a really great event - it not only helped to build public awareness and coincided with World Down Syndrome Day, but was also incredibly fun for everyone who attended, too. Each year the voice of people with Down syndrome, and those who live and work with them, grows louder.  Our annual event is a wonderful opportunity for people who work with Down syndrome  (teachers, carers, medical staff) and the families to connect and remind the community that it is something that is present, and that the numbers of children with Down syndrome are increasing. Our theme this year was “Rocking My Extra Chromosome” and everybody wore a fun T-shirt with a guitar motif which was both thought provoking and amusing.”
